Feature - Cultural activities: Our culture fix: what we want

5 mins read Education Youth Work
The government is pledging to provide young people with five hours a week of cultural activity. But what will this consist of? Far from the opera or ballet, rap and street dance are closer to what it is they want, as Tom de Castella discovers.

In the five hours a week, I'd like to see dancing and the chance to learn about art from around the world. It gives you a different experience and you can learn about how other people live. It's good to have these activities in youth clubs as you don't always have them in school.

I did a project on manga art at the Surma Centre (in Camden) and our drawings were shown around the estate. I enjoyed learning about Japanese art. We've also done breakdancing and are about to start a cookery course about world dishes."

At the Knowle West Media Centre we come to a group called Mouth of the South every Tuesday after school. It's a team of young people who meet to put together a local newsletter and website. We also read, write and create articles and are learning about podcasts. What I really enjoy most is editing.
