Family support keeps costly crises at bay

"She has changed my life, I feel confident I can look after my children now," says mother-of-three Sipa. She is one of thousands of parents who have received support through Family Action's Building Bridges programme.

An independent evaluation published last week found that the project has radically reduced the need for more costly statutory interventions. The likelihood of children being taken into care dropped by 70 per cent while the need for children to be put on the child protection register reduced by 54 per cent.

The study, led by founding chief executive of the Family and Parenting Institute Mary MacLeod, examined more than 2,000 families across two cohorts — one from 2004 to 2008, the other from 2009/10.

The families, like Sipa's, were referred to the service because they were identified as having multiple complex needs. With a history of mental illness and having to care for three children, Sipa was referred to Building Bridges support worker Fahima.
