FAITH-BASED YOUTH WORK: Youth input leads to higher church attendance

Provisional attendance figures for 2002 saw a rise of one per cent in monthly church attendance by children and young people from the previous year, when attendance fell by nine per cent.

A spokesman for the Church of England, which has 41,000 volunteer youth workers, said: "Our strategy to target young people launched two years ago. The increase could be a result of the psychological boost of having a strategy."

There are four elements to the Church of England's National Youth Strategy, which was developed by the Archbishop's Council: young people and worship; young people as leaders; resourcing youth workers; and young people and mission.
