EYFS plans are 'too much too soon'

1 min read Early Years
The head of a major childcare organisation has slammed government plans to take the Early Years Foundation Stage to the "next level" and incorporate it with the Key Stage 1 curriculum for primary school pupils.

Steve Alexander, chief executive of the Pre-School Learning Alliance, said the government's vision could lead to children being forced to do too much, too soon.

Children's minister Beverley Hughes laid out the government's vision for the future of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), due to come into force September 2008, at the Oxford University EYFS Conference. She said the EYFS's success would depend on having a strong, qualified workforce with the same vision and management skills as schools.

She said: "Strong leadership could take the foundation stage to the next level, beginning to make connections with the Key Stage 1 syllabus and linking up with local primary schools to smooth the transition for children and families."
