The government is set to increase funding for pre-apprenticeship courses aimed at young people not in employment, education or training, according to the Association of Learning Providers (ALP).
Aidan Relf, spokesman for ALP, said that Department for Business, Innovation and Skills ministers want to invest in training to prepare young people for apprenticeships. Under Labour, such training was referred to as programme-led apprenticeships.
But the new government will rename the provision before expanding it.
"Ministers recognise more pre-apprenticeship provision is necessary," Relf said. "But they agree with ALP that the programme should not have 'apprenticeship'
in the name, because apprenticeships come with a contract of employment and pre-apprenticeships do not."
