Exeter youth club to get a library

1 min read Youth Work
Young people in Devon are setting up a library in their local youth club.

The Knight Club in Beacon Heath, Exeter has received a grant from Devon County Council's library service to buy 150 books to create its own library.

Young people who attend the club will help staff to organise activities such as visits to Exeter Central Library and help choose the books stocked by the youth club library.

The move follows a consultation on what young people in Exeter expect from their local library service by youth worker Clive Nevill. He concluded libraries should have a dedicated area for young people with an internet cafe feel.

Nevill said he hoped by setting up a library in the youth club, young people would be more inclined to read a book. "One aim is to encourage young people to read for pleasure," he said. "There's quite a big focus in schools on reading for academic reasons but there's a danger young people can lose sight of reading for pleasure."
