Ethos agreement for school entry

1 min read Education
Schools will be able to require parents to sign up to their values before accepting children under government plans to revise the school admissions code.

The government's latest planned changes to admissions rules allow parents to be asked to provide written statements confirming they agree with the school's principles when seeking a place for their child.

The written statements have already proved controversial.

A spokeswoman from the teachers' union the Association for Teachers and Lecturers said: "We think this could be divisive and support selection."

Other proposals include allowing parents to apply to a minimum of three primary schools, because currently parents in some areas can only apply to one. The proposals also include plans for parents to make all applications to the local authority where they live, as opposed to the local authority where the school is based.
