Ending Child Poverty: Making It Happen

Early Years
The government is seeking views on proposed legislation prior to the introduction of the Child Poverty Bill in 2009, which will see it enshrine in law its commitment to eradicating child poverty by 2020.

An estimated 2.9 million children in the UK still remain deprived, and the new legislation will see the government accountable to Parliament on its progress to end child poverty. It recognises that local initiatives are vital to meet this commitment, and as a result will introduce legislation that will provide a framework to strengthen local approaches that are already in place and ensure progress is made across all communities.

The legislation will support the work carried out by local authorities, their partners and families, to ensure every child has the same life chances and opportunities.
