Employment: US-style work support centres to be piloted in English regions

1 min read

The New Start centres will be piloted from October in two English local authority areas, in partnership with youth organisation The Foyer Federation.

The potential pilot areas are Liverpool, Oxford, Salford, Suffolk, and Telford and Wrekin.

The centres aim to extend the New Deal for Young People programme, strengthening partnership work between JobCentre Plus - which operates New Deal - Connexions, voluntary services and local authorities.

Revealing the initiative exclusively to Young People Now, Andrew Smith, secretary of state for work and pensions, explained: "We want a seamless transition from Connexions to JobCentre Plus at 18, including sharing of information and continuity of provision, with those receiving specialist assistance through Connexions moving immediately into the New Deal where appropriate."
