EMPLOYMENT: Minimum wage on cards for 16- to 17-year-olds

The Department of Trade and Industry has indicated it will make an announcement on the issue this week. Chancellor Gordon Brown could also address it in next week's Budget.

Clare Fowler, projects officer at the British Youth Council, said: "We think something is coming but we're not sure whether it will be at the pay level we want." The council is calling for minimum wage laws to be extended to include full- and part-time workers aged 16 and 17.

John Lyons, the Labour MP whose early day motion supporting the council's stance was signed by 150 MPs last year, is optimistic.
