Education white paper: Councils set to lose control of schools

1 min read
The Government was preparing to unveil controversial new plans to reduce local authorities' control over schools, as Children Now went to press.

The education white paper was due to be presented to Parliamentyesterday (25 October). It was expected to contain measures to freeschools from the control of local education authorities, allowing themto expand, change the curriculum and set their own admissionpolicies.

This week, Prime Minister Tony Blair made it clear that the educationsystem was about to change fundamentally. "We want every school to beable quickly and easily to become a self-governing, independent stateschool," he said.

But the National Union of Teachers condemned the changes. Generalsecretary Steve Sinnott said: "The idea that the Government is promotingnew freedoms for schools belies the reality of its proposals. Schoolswill be replacing local authority support with increased central(government) control."
