Education welfare: Officers' comments wanted for report

The National Audit Office has asked education welfare officers to contribute to a study on underperforming schools.

Speaking at last week's annual conference of the National Association of Social Workers in Education, audit office officials asked members to contribute to the study. It will look at tackling problems in underperforming schools and is due by the end of the year.

Delegates also heard that the Department for Education and Skills plans to start monitoring attendance at pupil referral units "in the near future", something that is not currently included in national attendance figures.

Lawrence Warburton, president of the National Association of Social Workers in Education, said both moves were welcome.
