Education the answer to abuse

Most young people will only recognise abusive relationships if schools are forced to tackle the subject

Despite significant awareness-raising campaigns by government, charities and child welfare groups, research suggests that three-quarters of girls and young women are still unaware of the signs of domestic violence.

Their failure to fully understand the definition of abusive behaviour was highlighted by a recent Girlguiding study, which revealed that just 23 per cent of girls and young women aged between 11 and 21 are fully aware of what counts as domestic violence.

Girlguiding's report, Care vs Control, launched in conjunction with Women's Aid and based on research by ChildWise, also reveals that many misinterpreted jealous and controlling behaviour as genuine concern for their welfare.
