
Windsor Castle provided the backdrop last week for leading professionals from across the youth sector to debate how non-formal learning opportunities among young people can be enhanced.
A consensus was reached from the outset that non-formal learning is something of a Cinderella service within the educational arena. Host of the conference UK Youth believes it is recognised by some professions but, until recently, has been given little credibility among the formal educational establishment.
Supplement to education
Derek Browne, director of Entrepreneurs in Action, told delegates that independent schools "do non-formal learning brilliantly", but this is not the case in state schools. "Independent schools have a strong structure in place for developing leadership and networking skills," he said.
