Education: Schools urged to offer more sports

Education Health
Schools are being encouraged to offer new fitness activities, such as skateboarding, as part of a drive to get all children doing five hours of sport a week.

Fitness equipment company Technogym and the charity Youth Sport Trust have launched the Wellness Campaign following the recent Foresight Report that predicted half of all adults in the UK will be overweight by 2050. The campaign will embark on a national tour giving ideas to teachers on running activities and providing advice on design and renovations of their facilities.

Steve Parkin, managing director of Technogym, said: "We are aiming to attract young people who engage in little or no fitness activity but need to improve their health."

As part of the campaign, pupils are challenged to create a unique health and fitness programme to inspire children who don't normally get involved in fitness activities. The winning school will get fitness equipment worth more than £40,000.
