Although Evaluation of the Full Service Extended Schools Initiative, Second Year is generally positive about the scheme, it highlights difficulties catering for young people aged 11 to 14.
The researchers, from the University of Newcastle and the University of Manchester, found that secondary schools had problems finding appropriate activities for young people.
Secondary schools also found providing childcare, which is a key part of the extended schools initiative, confusing, instead seeing their role as providing study support or other "enrichment" activities.
