EDUCATION: Ofsted report reveals failings in post-16 education sector

1 min read

The Colleges and Area-wide Inspections 2001-02 report, conducted jointly with the Adult Learning Inspectorate, covers around 100 colleges in 23 areas in England. It criticised further education colleges for a lack of strategic planning, a "competitive attitude" and a lack of data. There was also little liaison between further education colleges and employers for work-based learning.

Inspecting the delivery of a range of subjects including IT, construction and business courses, the report found that 68 per cent of learning and teaching for adults was "good", compared with 63 per cent for 16 to 19-year-olds. The report claims that although 90 per cent of lessons observed by inspectors were "satisfactory" or above, the figure of 10 per cent "unsatisfactory" in further education colleges was still too high.
