The watchdog has launched the inquiry after receiving complaints fromparents about high prices and poor quality at retailers used byschools.
It has now written to 10,000 schools to find out whether their policyallows a choice of where to buy clothes.
The office's chief executive John Fingleton said: "This study will allowthe office to see whether exclusive contracts between schools andretailers have an adverse effect on the prices paid by parents, as wellas the quality and value of school uniforms."
