Education News: Special Needs - Advert to defend inclusive education

More than 600 people and organisations have signed up to a full-page advert in the Times Educational Supplement, which defends inclusive education.

High-profile signatories to the 4,000 advert include the Children's Society, the Down's Syndrome Association and Whizz-Kidz. Disability Equality in Education, which is leading the campaign to abolish all special schools by 2020, initiated the ad.

"We have never felt the need to do this before. But in the last few weeks there has been such a concerted attack on inclusive education that we felt we had to do something," said Richard Reiser, director of the charity.

The advert is in response to a recent report by Lady Warnock who championed greater inclusion in the 1980s. In the report she withdrew her support for the policy and said the inclusion agenda had had a "disastrous legacy" (Children Now, 15-21 June).
