Education News: Joined-up working - Scottish schools to targetattainment

Schools in Scotland are taking part in a new joined-up working initiative in a bid to raise the attainment of the country's most disadvantaged children.

The initiative involves multi-agency working with local health services,community groups and business organisations.

And around 20 schools will make themselves more accessible by openingtheir doors to the community 52 weeks a year.

A key element of the scheme focuses on early intervention with youngpeople at risk of falling into the category of not in education,employment or training.

A study by HM Inspectorate for Education found that a high proportion ofchildren on free school meals, those in care and those with specialneeds are likely to fall into this group.

Inspectors said that risks must be assessed at the earliest possiblestage with help from health services and social work.
