Education News: Industrial Relations - Scottish teachers land pay deal

Teachers in Scotland will benefit from higher salaries, thanks to a four-year pay settlement.

The deal is worth just over 10 per cent over four years, which means that in 2008 a probationer teacher will start on 19,900 compared to 18,000 now. Salaries at the top of the main scale will rise from 28,700 to 31,700.

Teaching unions, local government representatives and the Scottish Executive have all welcomed the settlement, saying it offers Scottish teachers stability.

"This is a good deal for teachers, the public purse and pupils throughout Scotland," said education minister Peter Peacock.
