Education News: Grammar schools - Poorer pupils miss out onadvantages

Pupils from poorer backgrounds do significantly better at grammar schools than in comprehensives, research has shown.

A study by Bristol University found that the benefits were equivalent toraising four GCSEs from a grade C to a B. But only 32 per cent of highability children eligible for free school meals attended grammar schoolsin areas that still used selection, compared with 60 per cent ofnon-free meal pupils.

Professor Paul Gregg, who led the study, said the paradox was thatgrammar schools had greater advantages for poor children than those whowere more affluent. "We should be trying to find how to get childrenfrom poorer families into good schools. The new admissions lotteries arean interesting way of thinking about it," he said.
