Education News: Extended schools - Treasury will examine disabledaccess

1 min read
The Treasury is to seriously consider how extended schools can be made more accessible to disabled children.

The chancellor's right-hand man, Ed Balls, has revealed that extendedschools will feature prominently in a major review of services fordisabled children to be undertaken by the Treasury later this year(Children Now, 6 July-1 August).

His comments raise the possibility of more money being directed towardsextended schools in the 2007 Comprehensive Spending Review.

In particular, he suggested that extra funds could be directed towardshelping disabled children travel to and from after-school clubs.

Balls, who is economic secretary to the Treasury, has already given hisbacking to the Every Disabled Child Matters campaign, which was launchedlast month (Children Now, 27 September-3 October).

Among other things, the campaign is calling for every extended schooland children's centre to deliver a full range of services to disabledchildren.
