Education News: Exclusions - Discipline lacking in larger schools

Pupil discipline is worse in larger schools figures have revealed.

The number of schools with more than 1,000 pupils has increased by 42per cent since 1997, while the number of pupils taught in schools withmore than 1,500 pupils has doubled.

The figures, obtained by Conservative shadow education secretary DavidWilletts, show that exclusions in larger schools account for more thannine per cent of the school population, compared with 3.7 per cent insmaller schools. Willetts said the Government needed to "think againbefore it pushes schools to become bigger and bigger".

A spokesman for the Department for Education and Skills agreed largeschools could face additional challenges but said these schools can "usetheir size to benefit pupils and the wider community by offeringout-of-hours clubs and community facilities".
