The increasing size of schools is having a detrimental effect on children and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, according to the Conservative Party.
Figures obtained by the party show that since 1997 the number of schools with more than 2,000 pupils has trebled. And 61 per cent of secondary school children are now educated in schools with more than 1,000 pupils, compared to 46 per cent 10 years ago.
Michael Gove, the shadow children's secretary, said: "All the evidence is that some of the toughest problems with discipline are found in larger schools.
"The government's pile ‘em high approach is letting down some of the most disadvantaged pupils."
