Education News: Emotional literacy - DfES to roll out national strategy in May

The Government plans to roll out a national social, emotional and behavioural skills strategy in all primary schools from May, with additional funding to support it, a senior official has revealed.

Jean Gross, senior director for the Primary National Strategy at the Department for Education and Skills, told delegates at a Pupil Inclusion Network meeting at the National Children's Bureau that whole-school approaches linking behaviour and learning would become an increasingly common theme of Government policy.

"We cannot assume that children already have the skills they need in order to manage their emotions and meet our expectations about their behaviour. We need to take active steps to develop their social, emotional and behaviour skills," she said.

Although some would need extra help to develop these skills, all children should be entitled to a curriculum that supported this area of their development, she added.
