Education: Extended to reach the most in need

3 mins read Social Care
Extended services are being given extra funds to reach disadvantaged children. Lauren Higgs and Janaki Mahadevan report.

From April, all schools will benefit from funding to subsidise access to extended services for disadvantaged children and young people, and children in care.

Funded with £40m from the Department for Children, Schools and Families, 37 school clusters in 18 local authorities have already been testing the subsidy. The national rollout sees an extra £167m made available for 2010/11.

Hilary Emery, executive director at the Training and Development Agency for Schools, says: "The good examples of schools that are delivering the subsidy all have one thing in common. They see it not just about giving out money to do something fun. It's about looking at children who are unable to engage in learning at the moment, and doing something that helps turn that around."
