Education: Education for young people in custody not good enough

1 min read

Anne McIntosh, Conservative MP for the Vale of York, said the existing system needs to be improved.

Speaking to Young People Now, she said there is a lack of structure to education provision. "Education in young offender institutions is very patchy, especially for girls," she said.

"There's no real monitoring or accountability and it's a case of many hours a week getting wasted. Girls aren't set down any parameters at all and it's a wasted opportunity, when education boosts their confidence." McIntosh said the system needs examining to ensure that young offenders are getting the best possible education when in custody. This should make it easier for them to find employment on release, and reduce the chances of them reoffending.
