Education committee in youth focus

Services for young people are likely to feature in one of the first reports from the new Education Select Committee, CYP Now can reveal.

Speaking in an exclusive interview, chair of the cross-party committee Conservative MP Graham Stuart stressed the importance of informal education.

"The select committee has done a lot on early years, but we haven't done a great deal on teenagers, youth services and provision for young people outside of school," he explained.

"It's important that the committee, despite the departmental name change, doesn't focus too narrowly on education and fail to pick up on the wider remit."

He added that spending cuts and the introduction of free schools and new academies would also be at the forefront of the committee's agenda, pledging to scrutinise government over the practicalities of delivering its education reforms.
