Education: Attainment - Black pupils target of council drive

Brent council is driving forward its work to tackle poor educational outcomes of Black pupils.

The task group launched in the borough (Children Now, 12-18 December2006) has met with parents, young people, teachers and communityorganisations to work out how to improve the achievement of thesepupils.

The Government's Minority Ethnic Pupils in the Longitudinal Study ofYoung People in England, published last week, recommended schoolsmonitor which pupils are streamed by ability, after researchers foundpoor teacher expectations and institutional racism contribute to lowerachievement among Black Caribbean children.
