Youth Matters contains many proposals outlined in the draft version of the green paper seen by Young People Now some months ago (YPN, 16-22 March, p8-9). But, encouragingly, the Department for Education and Skills has listened to feedback from the sector, especially on youth services and Connexions.
Local partners will need to agree the right balance between targeted and universal support and make clear the distinctive roles for each of the professions and services engaging with young people. Employers will have to look at the skills in their workforce and compare them to what local young people need.
But the paper emphasises that, within this "remodelling", a new and reinvigorated role is anticipated for youth workers. We are told that the contribution of youth work outlined in Transforming Youth Work: Resourcing Excellent Youth Services will still be true in the new integrated youth support services set-up.
