However, a number of factors are beginning to challenge this initial judgement. The Government is quite concerned about the lack of engagement with politics among young people, which was starkly brought home by the low turnout of young voters at the last election.
The Electoral Commission, an independent body set up by the Government at the end of 2000 to increase public confidence in our democracy by reforming the electoral process, has decided it would be good to look at the voting age. It is expected to announce a formal review in the next few weeks, along with a review of the age at which one can stand for elected office.
