Editorial: A week full of high emotion and tragedy

On Wednesday, the city - and especially its young people - was in raptures from the moment Jacques Rogge, president of the International Olympic Committee, announced that London would be hosting the 2012 Olympics.

But this turned to horror on Thursday morning, as commuters going about their daily routine were confronted with a terrorist outrage many feared inevitable once the 9/11 attacks on the US in 2001 were followed by invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq.

The week ended with emotional reminders of earlier bombings in London and the rest of Britain during the Second World War, as veterans gathered in The Mall to mark the 60th anniversary of the end of the conflict.
