Early years: Pedagogue plans to be evaluated

Cheshire's Sure Start service is to a launch an in-depth evaluation of its scheme to introduce "pedagogues" to children's centres (Children Now, 14-20 June).

Lead pedagogue Cathy Hughes said that an informal evaluation of theinitiative was "very positive". It took into account Ofsted reports,take-up of nursery places and the views of staff, providers andparents.

An in-depth study will be carried out from this autumn. Pedagogues willgather evidence on the impact they are making in different areasincluding nursery environments, working with trainee teachers andservices for children with complex health needs.

Cheshire's pedagogues are mostly qualified teachers with experience ofearly years and extra training on working with young children.
