Early help trailblazer

5 mins read Children's Services Early help
The Munro Review identified Merton Council's Supporting Families Service as an example of how agencies can work together to intervene early. Jo Stephenson reports.

Zara Wilson gave birth to her first child three weeks before her 16th birthday. As a young, single mum Zara admits it has been "hard work" bringing up her five-year-old daughter and four-year-old son. But she's had help from the London Borough of Merton's 0-12 Supporting Families Service.

Family support officer Tracey Reynolds, the family's lead practitioner, has helped solve a housing crisis for Zara, among other problems.

"My landlord told me I had to move out," Zara recalls. "If Tracey hadn't helped me I don't know what I would have done. She helped to sort my benefits and apply for a new place. Without her we'd probably be in temporary accommodation."
