Draft Regulations for the Training of Newly Appointed Special Educational Needs Co-ordinators in England.

Education
Views are being sought on draft regulations that would require all new special educational needs co-ordinators (Sencos) to take nationally approved training and be awarded a qualification.

School governing bodies would be responsible for ensuring all new Sencos complete the training. The regulations would amend the Education (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinators) (England) Regulations 2008, and would apply to community, foundation and voluntary schools, and maintained nursery schools in England.

The government will provide funding for training courses and will also supply cover for Sencos undertaking the training. The Training and Development Agency for Schools will invite potential training providers to apply for approval to offer the courses from September.
