Last year, there were 14 suicides in women's prisons in England and Wales. This year alone, there have already been 11 suicides.
Kate Sanderson investigates life behind bars and considers whether prison is the best place for some of the most vulnerable women in society. She also discovers that many prison officers believe prison is not the right place for mentally ill patients.
Pauline Campbell, the mother of Sarah Campbell, who died in Styal Prison, Cheshire, last year, says: "Sarah was only 18 when she died and she had a history of mental illness. I once went to visit her and she had a mark around her neck where she had tried to hang herself."
