Disabled left out of play strategies

Local authorities in Wales treat inclusive play for disabled children as an afterthought, according to a report by the country's children's commissioner.

A Happy Talent found only one out of 22 local authorities in Wales consulted disabled children and young people as part of their play strategies. More than half of all local authorities also failed to state an intention to include disabled children and young people in their play strategy and only two said there was evidence that their strategies actually deliver what these children want.

A spokesman for the Office of the Children's Commissioner for Wales said: "This report is not necessarily a criticism of local authority practice because it was a paper-based exercise. However, we will be providing local authorities with feedback based on their responses."
