Disability: Where to next?

The transition to adulthood can be difficult for any child, which makes it all the more important for those with disabilities to get the right support. Joe Lepper asks the experts for their top tips.

In its 2005 report Improving the Life Chances of Disabled People theGovernment gave its strongest indication yet that transition servicesfor young people with disabilities were in need of an overhaul. Thereport recognised there were too many "cliff edges" between children'sand adult services. In addition, options regarding employment andeducation were limited, and communication between agencies and withfamilies and children was inadequate.

Since then, a number of steps have been taken to create a more seamlessservice and many local authorities now have dedicated transition roles.In addition, a number of agencies have begun looking at how they canwork better together while the Department of Health has produced goodpractice guidance, and the Council for Disabled Children is currentlygathering further evidence of good practice.
