Disability: Database to review residential places

An England-wide database to help local authorities and primary care trusts review residential placements for disabled children will be piloted early in 2006.

It will provide a breakdown of the number and needs of disabled childrenliving in residential schools, children's homes and hospitals in a givenarea.

The announcement of the plans came as the Department for Education andSkills published a major report on disabled children in residentialplacements.

The report, Disabled Children in Residential Placements, provides acomprehensive picture of these children, showing that there are about13,000 disabled children in England in long-term residential placements. The vast majority are boys of secondary school age.
