Disability: CPAG warns against reform of benefits

Proposals to reform disability benefit could damage efforts to get children out of poverty, the Child Poverty Action Group said this week.

In a report, the group warned that Government plans to reform disabilitybenefit currently fail to recognise the needs of disabled parents. Thegroup argues that unless disabled people's parental responsibilities aretaken into consideration the changes will undermine efforts to reducechild poverty.

Kate Green, chief executive of the group, said: "Forcing disabled peopleto find work with the threat of benefit sanctions could becounterproductive."

The Government's Welfare Reform Bill is due to be published shortly.
