Deaf children: Relatives to get extra support

The National Deaf Children's Society has been awarded a grant of 128,000 by the Sure Start Strengthening Families Fund to pay for a project aimed at providing support for the fathers and grandparents of deaf children.

The Supporting Dads and Grandparents to Support Deaf Children schemewill provide information and guidance to fathers and grandparents whooften feel unable to care properly for their deaf child orgrandchild.

"Many fathers say they often feel excluded from aspects of their deafchild's life, such as missing meetings with professionals because theyare at work," said Anne Marie-Hall, deputy director UK services at theNational Deaf Children's Society.

"There is also a gap in information provision and support forgrandparents, who often feel unsure of how to help to support theirgrandchildren and the wider family."

The funding will be used to pay for consultations, informationresources, events and a new dedicated area on the website over the nexttwo years.
