One-third of MPs pledge support for deaf children

Health
The National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS) has revealed that a third of elected MPs signed its pre-election pledge to make support for deaf children a priority.

Among the most notable names to sign up are Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, Chief Secretary to the Treasury David Laws and Education Secretary Michael Gove.

During the election campaign NDCS supporters lobbied candidates urging them to sign up. Of the 965 candidates that signed 223 are now MPs.

Susan Daniels, NDCS chief executive, said: "The overwhelming support we have received from MPs for the election pledge highlights their commitment to improving the lives of deaf children and we will be working closely with them to ensure that this is realised in the coming years."

She added that in the average constituency, around 2,500 children have hearing problems.

Those MPs that sign up made a commitment to combat the inequality in education experienced by deaf children and improve support for their families.
