DCSF delay causes deadline headache

Local authorities are facing major pressure to meet the deadline for data returns that will decide how early years funding is divided, due to delays in government guidance.

In January councils will start collecting information for the revamped early years census, the annual data gathering exercise of the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF). The census is used to work out the early years funding each authority will receive.

But delays to DCSF advice means many will struggle to meet the 14 March deadline.

At a Capita conference last week, a DCSF official blamed the delay on technical problems and ongoing revisions to the information needed.
