This figure was made up of about 205,000 16- to 17-year-olds and 785,000 18- to 24-year-olds.
The rate of youth unemployment stood at 21.3 per cent, compared with the overall rate of 8.1 per cent for the UK.
The figures represent an increase on the previous quarter, during which period 202,000 young people aged 16 to 17 and 715,000 18- to 24-year-olds were unemployed.
Compared with the same period last year, there are 41,000 more unemployed 18- to 24-year-olds and 27,000 more 16- and 17-year-olds.
The government said the latest overall figure included 270,000 graduates looking for jobs. But it pledged to increase measures designed to help young people into work, such as sector-based work academies, which will combine training, work experience and a guaranteed job interview.
