Data Check: Children's Society expresses concern over runaways

1 min read Social Care
The latest report on runaways by The Children's Society questioned 7,349 young people aged 14 to 16 from 85 secondary schools across England.

The survey revealed that 8.9 per cent of young people had run away overnight on at least one occasion. Furthermore, 6.2 per cent said they had run away in the past year.

The research follows two previous reports about the scale and nature of the problem of young people who run away. The latest survey revealed that of those young people who admitted to running away, more than a third (36 per cent) had done so only once, but 55 per cent had run away on more than one occasion.

Worryingly, 11 per cent of the young people said they had been hurt or harmed while away from home. One in six said they had slept rough or stayed with someone they had only met while away from home. In the majority of cases, however, young people said they stayed with friends or relatives.
