Daily roundup: ‘Stranger danger', Walsall safeguarding and internships at O2

Parents fearful over children playing outdoors, Walsall's director of children's services steps down and 50 internships for young people, all in the news today.

Concerns over safety and traffic have left parents reluctant to let their children play outside, research for Play England has found. A survey of 1,000 parents, published to mark Playday 2012, found that 49 per cent of parents do not let their children play outside because of fears about "stranger danger". Around a third said their child do not play outdoors because of the potential for an accident or injury.

The director of children’s services at Walsall Council is to step down after an Ofsted report criticised the authority’s care of vulnerable children. Pauline Pilkington will leave her position once the first phase of an improvement plan is complete and the council has found a replacement.
