Daily roundup: Rotherham DCS, Portsmouth Ofsted, and Scottish independence vote

Rotherham DCS on long-term sick leave; Ofsted rates Portsmouth children's services as needing improvement; and 16- and 17-year-olds make history by voting in Scotland referendum, all in the news today.

The director of children’s services at Rotherham has gone on long-term sick leave, three weeks after a scathing report found that 1,400 children were victims of child sexual exploitation in the Yorkshire town between 1997 and 2013. The Doncaster Free Press reports that Joyce Thacker has been off work at Rotherham Borough Council since Monday. During a home affairs committee hearing last week, she was repeated told to quit her post by committee chair Keith Vaz.

Children’s services at Portsmouth City Council have been rated as "requires improvement" following an Ofsted inspection. The Portsmouth News reports that although three out of five areas of the service were rated as good – the report said too many children in the council’s care are leaving the system not in education, employment or training.
