Daily roundup: Policing, after-school care, and childcare

Police force criticised over failure to record child abuse crimes; councils unaware of out-of-school care provision; and call to link childcare funding to quality, all in the news today.

Leicestershire Police has been criticised for failing to record instances of child abuse. The BBC reports that Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary has raised “serious concerns” about the force after discovering that only six of 16 crimes against children referred from other agencies had been recorded.

A study has found that 60 per cent of councils do not have, or do not know whether they have enough out-of-school care for five- to 11-year-olds. The Family and Childcare Trust said its research shows that councils are failing to recognise that school-age children need caring for before and after school in order to support working parents.
