Daily roundup: playworkers' register, children's services, and energy drinks

A new register for qualified playworkers is launched; jobs at Wolverhampton children's services under threat; and children banned from buying energy drinks in some stores, all in the news today.

A new register designed to support the career development of qualified playworkers is being officially launched today following a successful pilot scheme. The Register of Playwork Professionals, developed and managed by SkillsActive, will regulate the sector and ensure that all members hold recognised and approved qualifications.

Up to 227 jobs at Wolverhampton City Council’s children’s services could be scrapped in a bid to save £8.3m over the next five years. According to the Express and Star, the cuts to the department are part of a plan to reduce the council’s overall budget by £98m. Councillor Val Gibson said the council has its “hands tied” over the decision and will do its best continue to support children and young people despite limited resources.
